Telus Health (Free Counselling)

Telus Health is a multinational corporate wellbeing company contracted by major private companies and government agencies to provide workers with free wellbeing tools to deal with stressful situations (so that management doesn't have to deal with those :).)

I've used this service for quite a few years now. Most of the counsellors I got were all very nice, but also unhelpful. Many of them have little knowledge or qualifications. Others are experienced counsellors but their expertise isn't in the field you need them for, and you wonder why you're connected with them. Most of them listen to you  for sure, let you vent, but too many show no interest or attention and respond with ready-made sentences, like, I'm so sorry to hear, oh that's terrible, aha uhm, but there is no empathetic listening or anything genuine when they say that they feel for you. You can feel when a person feels for you.

Many of the items of 'advice' or 'tools' they give you is just common sense, something that your friends/family would tell you or you already know. E.g. don't take things personally, breath in an out, contact HR, talk to the person who did this to you, journal, talk to your friends and family, do a list of pros and cons, use a budget sheet, discuss this with your spouse. Other times the information they provide you with is easily available by looking up Google.

Not sure if they get paid much, but quiet a few of the counsellors I've spoken to when really distressed were not in a professional setting but cooking at home, driving, walking from one place to another. That's the antithesis of what a professional counsellor or health professional should be doing. If a counsellor is  doing their chores while talking to a customer, their focus is not the customer, is the money they get for picking up the call.

The last counsellor I had said that she'd provide me with some helpful stuff at the end of the call, then she muted herself, she was cooking, was irresponsive for a minute, so she was perhaps at the toilet or talking to someone else, then came up and said the usual, so sorry, it sounds terrible, have you had the same problem at work before? Like no. Then she said that she cannot help me because she doesn't know me, (yes, she said that) and asked if I wanted to book another session. I said no because I work FT and it has to be weekends or evenings, and she lost her interest. You don't need to know anyone to help them, especially if you are a professional. A counsellor is a low level professional, and I wasn't consulting on mental health or anything that you need to be careful, like someone who has depression or mental illness, but work related stuff, for goodness' sake. You need to have, I don't know, some sort of  professionalism and empathy. She is not the only one. Too often they want to use all your sessions to milk you and continue doing nothing and uttering platitudes with no real empathy or interest in you. Empathetic listening is at the core of counselling, so why they cannot do that if  they are paid to do that? Mind you this last counsellor lists herself on Linkedin. Others have private clinics and PAs. Yet, they seem all cut by the same tailor.  Why are these people hired or working for Telus? They have no empathy or professional skills, but they are paid for it.

I have several work colleagues having the same negative experience, they all say, they are worthless, they don't help you, they are not even competent. So this is not only my own experience.

There is no option at the end of the call for us to rate the counsellor's service. In most cases, at least for me, they call you, so it's understandable that they don't ask you for feedback. There is no quality control I think :) Even when I've been transferred to the counsellor directly from the phone operator, there hasn't been a request for feedback. That's good for them because... look at the reviews on Trustpilot!

Be careful, they record  the calls if they are in their office and have to ask for permission to do that. You can say no, of course. If they don't mention anything upfront you can easily ask them before the conversation starts. Also, it is unclear how or who handles your personal data. Don't provide information that is strictly necessary

For people without an inner circle, Telus might provide some relief as, worst case scenario,  they listen to you and are nice overall, and it. costs you nothing. In the best possible scenario, they will be helpful and offer several sessions that might help you to deal with specific issues. Yet, contact them without any expectations or you'll be disappointed.

I want to finish with something positive.
I've had 2-3 occasions where the counsellors were really helpful and truly genuine. They helped me to make my mind, take a decision or just appeased my upset.  Also, the girls who pick up your initial call and book you in and do your profiling are always sweethearts, as well.

IKEA 365+ Stainless-Steel Square Food container (600 ml)

This is another brilliant IKEA 365+ food container that I use all the time. It's very small, but it fits my small air-fryer beautifully and it has replaced the very toxic stinky greasy silicone liners I had before.

It's not only an air-fryer container. I use it to store leftovers or small quantities of cooked vegetables in the fridge (the plastic or bamboo lids are sold separately), and to reheat and bake in my normal oven.

It washes beautifully. Although it will lose its lustre with use, mine still looks great despite the many uses.

I wish they made this one in larger sizes.

DESIGNER Unknown.

MIND  Freezer, dishwasher and over safe.

IKEA 365+ Food storage basket with lid (15 W x 15 D x 11 H cm)

I'm a fan of IKEA 365+ products as I have had many for years and they are still in great condition. This basket is too cute and Skandie for me to pass. I have two of these to store onions, garlic, ginger, turmeric, apples, and another two for small items of chocolate (Ferrero Rocher balls and small chocolate protein bars for example). They look great on the my kitchen table, and the mesh is perfect to keep onions and garlic aired, and to see though the contents.
In the past I've also used to store used batteries and other small items.

They are stackable, so they occupy little space, whether they have the lid on or off.

DESIGNER Unknown.

MIND Don't use in the fridge or outdoors. NOT microwave safe. NOT dishwasher safe.

MATERIALS

Basket: Steel, Polyester powder coating

Lid: Bamboo, Clear acrylic lacquer
Seal: Silicone rubber

DRAGON Stainless-Steel Salad/dessert Fork Set (16 cm)

I bought this pack in a hurry as I was having a gathering at home and needed some extra dessert forks. These look simple, which is great to match with any other cutlery design, They are made of stainless steel, dishwasher safe, and ridiculously cheap.

I regretted the purchase as soon as I got the parcel. These aren't desert forks, too big for that. They  are more salad forks than anything else. The stainless steel is paper thin, so it can bent easily. Yes, the design is so simple that there is no design :)

DESIGNER Carl-Gustaf Jahnsson.

MIND Wash before the first use.

CARE Dishwasher-safe.

RAMSTA Battery-operated Minilamp (White) (27 mm H x 70 mm D)

I bought one of these to try the product, and I use it inside one of my wardrobes. Despite the small size, it gives a strong light and occupies no space. It's easy to operate and install, and works with three AAA batteries. You can keep this in your handbag, or put it on top of something, on the ceiling of a wardrobe or cupboard (the base is covered with a peeling sticker that exposes the sticky part), or just keep it aside as an emergency lamp. It

Make sure that you fasten the cover well enough so that it doesn't fall or the lights don't go off. If the cover is not fastened enough, there is not enough pressure to make the batteries work.

I've had mine on my wardrobe's ceiling for several months and it's still working well and hasn't fallen off.

The main downside is that you can buy packages of similar 2-4 mini-lamps at Coles, Woolies, Kmart or Amazon a cheaper price per unit.

MIND Do not mix old and new batteries, different brands or types.

MATERIALS

Base: ABS plastic
Shade: Acrylic plastic

CARE Wipe clean with a dry cloth.

KJUGE Pouffe with storage (Knisa dark grey) (38 cm D x 33 cm H)

I have several of  these around my home, full with travelling gear, emergency kit, and soft furnishings. They aren't the most posh looking pouffes, but they are modular, and can be used separated or form a combination, like in the photo. They aren't visually appealing, but I find that the dark grey is not visually disruptive either. They are very light so I can move them around easily, even when they are full. It holds tons of stuff and you can sit on them as long as you aren't 110Kgs of weight or more. They fit in the Kallax modular shelves, but they don't look good in those, to be honest. I don't like the outward label, which is also a pull, because it lacks finesse. The pouffe is easily to fold and store when not in use.

DESIGNER  IKEA of Sweden.

CARE It cannot be washed or dry-cleaned, just vacuumed or wiped with a damp cloth. The cover has a lighfastness of 5-6 on a scale of 8, so it has high resistance to colour fading. This cover’s ability to resist abrasion has been tested to handle 40,000 cycles (30,000+ cycles means a good ability to resist abrasion).

MATERIALS

Bosch Home and Garden Spirit Level (12 cm )

This is such a great tool to have at home. Pocket size, easy to store, and very practical. I've used it for small DIY decor and assemblage projects and it works beautifully. The fluoro bubble window makes it clearly visible even when the work area is a bit dark. It's sturdy and has the classic Bosch brand colours. A must in any DIY kit.

SVAMPIG Sponge (Grey-Green)

Not a fancy design or good-looking sponge but it was so cheap that I couldn't resist the temptation. Both sides are covered by a scourer liner, so that's great. Having said that, this is an average sponge. The sponge part is actually very good quality, but the scourer liner detaches easily, which defeats its purpose. Unfortunately, this also happens with branded sponges, so at least this is cheaper.  I find that some of the Kmart novelty sponges are better quality than these.

FEJKA Artificial potted Cactus (6 cm)

This FEJKA cactus is just beautiful. It looks very natural and the simple design makes it great for any small corner in your home. I have two of these in different spots in my  Skandie office and they look great. This cactus plant can be used indoors and outdoors. I won't be using it outdoors, but I can put it by the window without fearing that the sun will discolour or damage the plastic.

Kmart Blind Dusters 3pc Set

I have Venetian blinds in my place, so I thought this duster would be great to clean my blinds racks easily. The duster is made of cheap plastic and the sleeve is a plushy microfibre fabric, which is easily washable; it comes with two complimentary sleeves. After using it, I find that the design would have been ideal if it had just one opening (a la tongs) not two. This isn't practical as you have to manually adjust the tons between the racks all the time. Also, it doesn't come with any extension handle, so you can only use it on the lower rack not the whole blinds. Cheap for sure, but also a waste of money and not much design thought behind.

Kaspersky Premium Total Security 2025 (3-Device, 1 Year) [Digital Download]

I bought this at a bargain price on Amazon last year. Kaspersky Premium has always been in the top 5 in most tech magazine lists of best antivirus, so I was elated to find this at that price. After downloading the product on my computer, I went to download the app on Google Play and couldn't find it. This is because the company is among many other Russian tech companies banned world-wide after the war started. That's why you don't find reviews about the 2025 product anywhere and you have to download the app for other sources that aren't Google Play. It was too late for me to return the product, so I decided to continue with it.

The antivirus runs well, without consuming much energy on my computer and laptop. It is not invasive, something that I appreciate, especially in my phone. It comes with a free VPN quota per day, which is too small to do anything, to be honest. Other antivirus brands come with higher quotas or free VPN.  At the same time, due to the price and to the fact that I rarely use VPN (as it interferes with the functionality of some of my browsers and programs), that is OK with me.

I don't allow Kaspersky to access my pay details or save my passwords, just in case. I won't buy it again if the war continues. On the other hand, other products do the same and are in countries supporting other wars (American companies, for example).

Kmart Easel Studio (161cm)

Good quality easels are really expensive, so I was thrilled to find this one at an affordable price at Kmart. It came in a flatpack, and I found it a bit challenging to put it together, but it ended like in the photo.  It's made of good quality sturdy wood and it is easily adjustable. A bargain for the price as similar easels would cost you double in, say, Officeworks and especially in an arts shop.

Kmart Desk Side Tray

I hesitated a bit to busy this sliding mesh under-desk drawer unit as I thought it wouldn't work with my Ikea desk tabletop. I'm glad that I bought it. It's extremely affordable and very practical. It has different compartments in different sizes, which are perfect to store different kinds of stationery. I have a good deal of pencils, biros, fountain pens, markers, erasers, sharpeners, sticky notes, small pen drives and scissors, and other small goodies inside. The biggest letdown is the rotating screws system, as they 're made of OK plastic and they need to be readjusted now and them, as they don't hold too tight due to being plastic. The back small compartments are a bit difficult to reach, so I put there things that I don't use often.

MIND

It cannot be used outdoors, but who would use this outdoors?!

Montana Cans Montana GOLD 10 Tryout Capset Spray Paint Cap

These Montana Gold nozzles are supposed to work with Montana Gold spray cans, but they also work with Montana Black cans and Liquitex spray paint cans (I've tried this myself). The package comes with a printed illustration of what each nozzle does, so that you get familiarised with each one. Also, the colour coding of the caps and mouth point makes them easy to recognise. The pack is really cheap, especially taking into account that the nozzles work with different brands of spray paint.

Debco Cacti & Succulent Potting Mix (10L)

I was elated at having this potting mix delivered at home. I have used this with three pots (a large one, a medium one, a small one) with three different types of succulents. I'm glad to say that they are growing healthy. The mix has control release fertiliser and a course grit. Great value for money.

Liquitex Professional Acrylic Spray Paint (400 ml) (Carbon Black, 0337)

This spray paint was designed with the professional painter in the head, so it has all the things that an artist looks for in an acrylic paint: great vibrant colour, good coverage, lightfastness, and a good description of the paint properties on the cover. The result is a perfect spray paint can with a good spray system that has no smell at all. I recently discovered that the Montana variety nozzles I own can be used also with Liquitex, so that's awesome because, in this way, I can change the nozzle when I want the spray to behave differently, or cover a wider/narrower or larger/smaller area.

Generic Cat Wrist Rest Mouse Pad

Super-cute silicone cat that works as a wrist support cushion. It really allows the wrist to rest comfortably. The material doesn't deform or changes shape, or, said differently, recovers its shape after use. The material is so yummy that the cat can be used as stress relief ball. Price was ridiculous for such a great product. I would have loved the rest being a bit larger, but is is great buy and very useful.

Montana Can Black Spray Paint (Tiffany) (400 ml)

I purchased this Montana Black can variety  due to the difference in Price with Montana Gold and especially with Liquitex. After using it, I can explain the difference in price. The colour spreads well and evenly, however this can has an unpleasant strong chemical odour even when wearing a professional spray mask. Like the smell of a spray varnish or fixative. Liquitex has not that problem and doesn't smell of anything. I guess Montana Black  was designed to be used outdoors (graffiti or mural painting for example) and the smell will definitely be less noticeable in an aired space.

The nozzle is interchangeable, so if you have the nozzle variety pack (sold separately), you can easily change the nozzle to control how the spray behaves.

The blue colour in this can is slightly different from the photo, less teal-ish and more blue-ish, but it is still  beautiful.

I was a bit hesitant to buy this can as I bought a bottle in the past and the spray system didn't work at all, so the bottle cannot be used or emptied out. I found the same complaint from other customers online. However, I'm happy to say that this can works beautifully.

Thermos Stainless Steel King Vacuum Insulated Food Jar (470ml)

This is a great soup thermos that I use almost every day. I heat my soup around 6am  and put it in my lunch bag, which has some sort of isolation as well. I have lunch at around noon to 1pm, and the soup is still warm. I find this variety especially good for liquid or creamy soups, but I use a wider one from the same brand for chunky soups as I find this jar a bit inconvenient for that.

The jar cleans easily by hand, but it's also dishwasher safe. It comes with a complementary foldable spoon that one can easily insert on the tap nook.
