Dick Smith (Online Retailer)

Dick Smith have plenty of just-online offers, like pro-rate expense discounts, or day specials, beyond what is in the catalogue, so I decided to try the online shop to buy two items I needed and take advantage of one of their special online weekend discounts. The prices were already fantastic, but I saved 30 extra bucks on the spot.  Their delivery fees were really cheap.

The purchase online was very easy and I promptly received confirmation of the processing and shipping of my order. They provided me with a tracking link, which mentioned that I better  until after 7pm next day to get any info about my order. I did so on at the requested time to no avail, and the same next day in the morning without results. I called Dick Smith's Customer Service and they redirected me to the freight company. The lady on the phone was lovely but she could not track my parcel with the info I had been provided with and none of the numbers worked; she guessed that the parcel has not been dispatched yet and that was the reason.  Not even two hours later, the delivery guy showed up at my place! That was a day and a half after my purchase online, which is fantastic.

They need to solve their tracking reference system because it could have happened that my parcel was late, or I was not at home, and it would have been an annoyance for all the parts involved. Nobody wants to be glued to their place to wait for a delivery that has no day or time on it. They just show up. So a working tracking link is necessary.

Beyond that my experience online was very good.

Lifespace Home Innovations (Online Retailer)

Lifespace is a home and garage storage and organisation store. I've bought a couple of times in the past from this online retailer and I love the items I got, the variety of products online, the speedy dispatch and delivery.

I really like the range, quality and functionality of the design of the storage products these guys have, and pricing is the same you find for similar items in similar storage and organisation stores,
(Howards, for example). A poor consolation, as most items are expensive unless you buy them during sale periods.

Their online shop is easy to browse and you can check-out as a guest without the need of registering, which is always a point-maker with me. They clearly state which products are in stock, which ones are limited, and those that are out of stock, and you will receive an email when your order is processed and another when a tracking link once it is dispatched. They d
ispatched my items next day using TollEPC, and these guys SMSed me when my parcel was out for delivery.

A few days after delivery Lifespace sent me an email requesting a review for each item.

Shipping costs were low, something that I always love, but
would like their shipping costs waved for purchases of 100+ or 150+ bucks.

Lifespace is a reliable online retailer, and my experience with them is very positive. If they sold at cheaper prices. I would visit them more often.

Chemist Warehouse (Online Retailer)

I have always been a devotee of the Chemist Warehouse stores. Not pretty places but they have anything I need from prescription medication, OTC medication, vitamins and supplements, beauty and cosmetic products, perfumes and cleaning products, sex toys, travel products, and all at very good pricesMy sort of heaven.

Although I have been buying from Chemist Warehouse for years, lately I am ordering online, and I am very happy with their online shop.

CW's online shop is large and well structured, with a huge variety of products available. Everything is sold at the same price you get it from a real store. The search tool is great not just to looup up products you already know, but to search for types of medication or active ingredients. For example, you can look up Vitamin C, or Clotrimazole or anti-histamines or Murine. You also have the latest catalogue online, so you can order those super-discounted products online as well. The description of some products in their individual page could be more detailed, but this varies from product to product, and overall it is a very good online shop.

They deliver to Australia and overseas, and you get free domestic delivery if you expend over +100, which is easy if you buy bulk. Otherwise, their shipping fees are reasonable. You can include prescriptions in your order; of course, you have to provide exact details of the prescription before they put the medication in your parcel. Yet, it is worth ordering, as their prices for prescription are way cheaper than elsewhere.

You have to register to order. Once you pay, a confirmation email is sent to you. Once your parcel is dispatched, you receive another email with the tracking link. You can pay with credit card, Bpay or Paypal.

Dispatch has always been reasonably fast, like a couple of days and they use Australia Post. The delivery has also been as per estimated periods and the parcels brought to my door properly packed, so bottles with liquid are all sealed in individual plastic bags, and items with glass containers are properly wrapped.

This is e-pharmacy at its best.

Bed Bath N' Table (Online Retailer)

I love Bed Bath N Table's cover duvets and some of their towels, and I have been buying them in real stores for years. However, my first experience online was very good.

The website is easy to browse, prices and discounts easy to spot, and the pricing is the same as in the shops.

The shipping took about 24 hrs to be dispatched, and my parcels were posted via Australia Post's registered mail.

Shipping is free for purchases over 150 bucks, which is great if you decide to buy a whole set of towels, duvet set or doonas because you will be paying around that money. If you expend less, their shipping fees are still reasonable and affordable, nothing to stop you from shopping

You know what a business is made of when problems arise and they have to deal with them. My first shopping online from BBT was affected by the mishandling of my parcels and my parcel got lost somewhere in the Universe. However, BBT's customer service was absolutely professional, caring and hassle free. They launched an investigation with Australia Post and sent my order again for the second time at no extra charge without waiting for the resolution of the case. That is what customer service should be.

I received the parcel promptly, well packed, and they are the usual gorgeous products that I love from BBT.

Replica Furniture Online (Online Retailer)

I decided to give Replica Furniture a go after seeing the positive reviews posted online and just because I could not find in my city the Hans Wegner replica chair in the stain I wanted.  I had seen and touched the chair in many stores before I ordered from RF and I knew in advance how the chair's build, thickness, finishes, colours and textures should be.

The chair took a bit over 24 hours to be dispatched from the home Brisbane store and was sent to me via Toll EPC. A tracking link was provided to me immediately after dispatch and Toll sent me a SMS when my parcel was out for delivery.  The chair arrived within the estimate time of delivery mentioned by the retailer.

The delivery fees aren't bad taking into account that, well, we are talking items of furniture that need of a bit of extra-packing and care.  Pricing was similar to that in most medium-range furniture shops I had visited in my city.

Regarding the quality of the item I received, well, it is a bit average, not that good but not bad either. The chair is poorly assembled and stained, and the joints between legs and seat area underneath were not stained or were roughly so. The top coat stain is just OK. The quality of the wood is just OK. The quality of faux-leather seat cover is OK.  In short, this is not the solid polished chair I had seen in the stores in my city for  similar price.

I expected the chair to be delivered assembled, because the site does not state the opposite, and it was! However, nothing is mentioned in the site. It would be great if Replica Furniture provided customers with explicit information regarding whether any given piece comes fully assembled or not. Also, it would be great if RF  provided customers with an approximate date when an out-of-stock item will be back in stock, so that customers can decide whether waiting or not.

I always hesitate to buy furniture online, and this was the first time I took the plunge. My experience with Replica Furniture was hassle free, fast and very satisfactory regarding the service they provide, but a bit disappointing regarding the quality of the materials used in the product I ordered.
Yet, I would not hesitate to order from them again if I needed any small accessory or I was in need of a medium-price spare chair that could not be found in a city store. If I wanted to buy top-notch quality I would go elsewhere.

Australian Physhiotherspy Equipment (online shop)

I came across the APE'S online shop while looking for a brand of therapeutic pillows I used to have when I lived in WA Australia, which were recommended by chiropractors and physiotherapists. This sort of products are quite pricey, but I was able to order them from this place at the same price I bought them from my Physiotherapy practice in Perth. They sell a good deal of therapeutic equipment, which

This online retailer is mostly directed to professional physiotherapists but they sell retail if you are interested in buying anything. I bought two orthopaedic pillows for about 60 bucks the two. Great price for such a good quality product. The place is easy to browse and to order from, but you have to register before you order. I placed my order online and they dispatched next business-day via Australia Post.

Unlike other online retailers, there is no confirmation email after you place your order. However, you will receive an email with a tracking link once your order is dispatched.

This is my first time ordering from these guys, and I will certainly use them in the future and not just pillows.

Amazon Book Store (Online Retailer)

I visit Amazon Store very often, sometimes daily, mostly to buy e-books. Although I have purchased items that are not books from Amazon, this review is about the book store, from which I have been buying for years.

I rarely buy books on paper any more unless I need them and they are not available on digital format. This being the case, and Kindle being a free app, I have buying and reading Kindle ebooks for many years at very affordable or cheap prices (and some of the classics for free). Most digital serious books in Amazon would cost you around 9-10 American bucks, some academic ones included (although these tend to be way more expensive especially if very specialised). To be fair, I have also found many Kindle books (especially old ones) to be more expensive that the hard copy, but this is the rule not the exception. And really, you do not have to pack ebooks when you move.

I usually buy my ebooks and hard copy book by using "Buy with a click" button. You just press the button, and voila. You need to have your personal details and credit card registered and the button activated. Dangerous! because pushing a digital button is the easiest thing when you fancy something. Digital books are delivered instantly to your device/s, and a sale confirmation  emailed to you. The return polices for digital books are great. Sometimes you press the "buy this ebook" by mistake or just start reading it and you think it is bad quality or does not work in your device, and you can return it, no questions asked.

If you buy a hard copy book, the procedure is the same, but your order takes a while to be processed and dispatched. The process of fulfilling your order is not immediate, even if the book is in stock, so you have a natural cooling period to cancel your order if you want. Delivery times vary from state to state and country to country. Usually, Amazon tells you the estimated natural period when you can expect your book at home, and they are right on the spot most times. A tracking link is provided with your dispatch notification email, so you just have to wait and see. Your hard-copy book contains also return forms just in case you want to return it or exchange it once you have it at home. In the past, I bought books that were very expensive in Australia at half the price for the same edition and book on Amazon. Despite the high International rates for some of those books, I got them way cheaper.

Prime and Kindle unlimited are great, especially if you live in the USA, but not so if you do not. Waw waw wawww.  On the other hand, Amazon has full sites in several countries; if that is the case, you will benefit from having access to the many features that they have, which are limited in partial Amazon sites. One of the advantages of having an Amazon account is that if you don't find the book you are looking in the American store, you could find it in other international stores, and sometimes a way better prices, and you can access those sites by using the same email and password you use to log in on your home Amazon. I have experienced this to be the case with the purchase of bilingual dictionaries that costed a fortune on Amazon, but were one third or half the price for the same item and edition in their country of origin.

If you are new to Amazon and are making your first purchase, you might find that the site can demand your VISA to be verified. You do that through your bank's website. Most online retailers do not require this any more, and I am not sure if Amazon does so nowadays as I have been buying from them for years and my card is already verified. I think it is great that they required visa verified cards as this is an extra layer of security to your purchases.

Before ordering anything outside the USA, not to inflate your purchase and not get surprises, check two things:
> That the book is sold and dispatched from Amazon warehouses. That means that the costs will be way cheaper than any other retailer selling on Amazon.
> If you are buying from other retailers through Amazon, check in advance their pricing for International deliveries, before proceeding to purchase, and decide if this inflates the price of your product or is still good.

In the past, I found Amazon Customer Service polite, very well organised, but extremely robotic and idiotic, annoying and frustrating despite them wanting to help. The good thing is that I only required their help once in the last 15 years. As I have already mentioned, books returns are effectuated automatically without any question being asked, no fuss, and immediate in the case of ebooks.

Amazon's reviewing system is great, but I have found a bit bunch of trolls, preachers, author's pals, author's mad fans, and free-book-for-review reviewers (Vine Voice being an example, clearly marked as so though) who can be an annoyance. Generally speaking, though, I trust the site's reviews and some reviews and reviewers are amazing. I have discovered amazing books through great reviewers. As a rule of thumb, always look for those reviews and reviewers who tend to have a "verified purchase" sign in their reviews.  Amazon does not do enough, not much really, to stop trolls, something that annoys me a lot, and they allow clear sexist comments, clear to anybody with two eyes, to stay there even if you complain. I think this is the case because those dealing with that sort of complain are... sexist themselves, which is disgusting and shameful.

The Kindle App is fantastic and you can download it and use it for free anywhere, your phone, tablet, PC and laptop. I would not recommend updating it too often, unless it is giving you problems. Many of the updates come fully charged with bugs and they can be very frustrating when they do not allow you to read the books you own or keep crashing the app. The reading experience with Kindle is fantastic as you can adjust the size and style of your font, brightness, spacing and margins and the lateral toolbar allows you to navigate the book in the easiest possible way. Unlike Google books, the passing of one page to another is not realistic, something I really love and miss. Besides, Kindle is not good for reading PDF book, EPUB books or any other format that is not Kindle. Yet, it is understandable.  Google Reader does no allow you to read Kindle books either.

Kindle for PC or Kindle on the Cloud, are also free and alternative ways to have your books at hand, especially if you need some of them for work, which is my case.

Regarding the rendering of books on Kindle format, although most books (and graphic books) are launched both in hard copy and on digital form at the same time (therefore, identical), many others ebooks are edited digitally way after the hard copy was published. Some editorial houses do not bother to update books that were not originally prepared for the digital market. So, you can find yourself exasperated because, despite being charged full price for a book, the rendering of the book for Kindle is defective, unpolished, lacking a bit of work, footnotes rendered badly, indexes rendered badly, and so on. Things that rest enjoyment to the joy of reading, and which I consider both a disrespect to the author and the reader.

Overall I am a devotee of ebooks and of Amazon Book Store.

Recharge.Com (Online Retailer)

I bought a cheap prepaid Orange Mundo SIM card in Spain to use during my visit there. This particular SIM card is very good for international roaming, so I decided to use it during my long trip abroad. Unfortunately, I forgot to open an online account to recharge it online before I left Spain, so I found myself in the middle of nowhere unable to recharge my mobile phone.

I found Recharge.com via Google. The site allows you to top up prepaid cards from +300 mobile carriers spread throughout + 70 countries. You can pay with your credit card, Paypal and a good number of other safe ways of payment, which vary from country to country (iDeal, Bancontact, KBC Homebanking, ING Home-Bank, Sofort, and Giropay). The site charges a fee for the transaction, but it is tiny and shown beforehand, so it is up to you to continue or not. The fees I have paid are very small in comparison with the benefit and service I got from them.

Recharge.com can be browsed in several languages (English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, German, Portuguese and Polish) and has a very easy to use website, with everything you need to know told to you upfront in the FAQs.

It sounds too good to be true? Well, it is good and it is true!

I have used the service four times during my trip across different countries and the top-up was immediate. I used my VISA card as as payment (normal info requested plus extra verification info) and not even five minutes later I received an SMS from my mobile carrier confirming the top up amount. Therefore, I was able to use my mobile immediately! Awesome!

The service is specially useful in small and remote countries if you are using a local SIM, but also available to carriers in USA Spain an Poland. See the map below to check if the card you have can be recharged via this site. Of course, you can top up your card from any country in the world, online, even if they don't have any carrier providing their services through this site:

MIND
If you introduce the wrong number, there is no way to rectify or recover your money, as the top up is available to customers immediately! So mind your fingers and open your eyes!

Travalo (Online Shop UK)

Website
Online shop
Facebook

Do you use perfume regularly? Do you travel? Do you go away for long weekends? Are you on the move and want to carry your favourite scent/s without having to carry the whole bottle/s?

Travalo - a Scottish Company- came up with the perfect solution: small refillable spray and rollerball containers that can be filled and refilled directly from the perfume bottle. They are very small and light, leak-free, aircraft-approved, easy to carry, stylish and colourful.

To fill in the container, you first remove the nozzle of the perfume, plug the stem into the bottom hole of the Travalo container, and pump it until it is full. The different models of Travalo can load 4-5ml of product, giving you about 50-65 sprays.

Although the product can be found in some local and international perfumeries, I found that the variety of colours and models is just Spartan in Perth, so I have been ordering mine from the Travalo's online store directly.

They have different types an colours suitable for women and men. Pricing goes from the 25 bucks for the Rollerball models to the 20 bucks for the Classic models. They have a gorgeous variety of colours, which come handy when you have more than one perfume and want to identify them easily.

Shopping from their website is very easy, and you will receive a confirmation email when you place your order, and another one when the order is fulfilled.
You can use PayPal or your preferred credit card for payment, and the site is SSL secured. Good thing for Australians - an Australian company settled in Queensland (Brandpoint) fulfils the orders, so you will get yours in about onr week. They deliver to your door, but if you aren't at home, they will take your parcel to your nearest Post Office, from where you can collect it.

Customer service has been very friendly and prompt to any enquiry. They do not provide (or at least me) with a tracking link, but they diligently reply to any enquiry about your order.

KUDOS
Easy to order and shop.

Fast delivery.
Very informative website and great customer service.
No need of registration for online shopping, although you might want that.
Gift packs available.
Pricing can be set in USA, AU and Canadian Dollars and Euro.

DOWNSIDES
The products are pricey.

The website lacks a bit of information on International shipping costs and timing.
The online shop is a bit temperamental at times.

TIP
If you get the register/login page when accessing the online shop, refresh the page and the products page will show.

Decalgirl (Online Shop, USA)

Decalgirl is an American online shop that sells skins for almost every possible gadget in the market, and cases for smart-phones. The business started as a couple's home-business in 2003 and has become a millionaire business with 25 staff members. You will understand their success when you visit Decalgirl.

Decalgirl's website is simple and very functional. You will find easy searching for your gadget, zooming the artwork on display, and getting answers regarding ordering and shipping. I love the variety of artwork they have, and the fact that all the items are available for all gadgets, which is not the case in other decal online shops. Most importantly, you can upload your own photos and artwork, and customise the gadget of your choice. You can choose mate or glossy finish. The only downside I can mention is the lack of a search box based on tags or keywords, which would be handy if you are looking for, say, cars, sports, mermaids, or a specific theme or motif you want for your gadget.

Decalgirl's prices are very similar to the ones you find elsewhere online. Shipping prices for Australia are quite expensive: about 10 dollars for standard post, which can take up to two working weeks; upgraded postal varieties are around 30 bucks. These are ridiculous prices for an almost-weightless product, and only worth paying if you order a bunch of things or you cannot find your item elsewhere. Matte and glossy finish are charged at the same price, though.

After paying and placing your order, you will receive an email with the details of your order and a link to their order status page where you can check, yes!, the state your order before shipping. The shipping of your order can take up to three days; then, you will receive an email with a tracking link.

Registration is easy. Use your existing Facebook, Twitter or Google Account, and you will be able to save your favourite pieces of artwork, make your wish list and save your personal projects. You can create your own profile, save your payment details, and receive the Decalgirl's newsletter if you want.

I love the skin I chose for my kindle. Decalgirl was the only place I found this image, so I put up with the shipping costs. I got my order in 17 working days, and the product was identical in colour and detail to the one in the photo in their website. The decal is great regarding colours and quality of the material used.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
I am very happy with the service provided by Decalgirl, but they absolutely need to make things easier for overseas customers. What about reducing the shipping fees if you purchase more than one item? What about covering themselves the shipping costs if you choose standard shipping? What about offering a better post option for the same price?

Cosmetics Now (International Online Shop)

"Cosmetics Now" is an international etailer with offices in the USA, Australia and the UK that sells male and female cosmetics, make-up, and fragrances. The Company is very similar to StrawberryNet and OzCosmetics, but I consider "Cosmetics Now" an upgraded version regarding the looks of the site, and the number of beauty and perfume houses available in the site. Prices are very similar to the other two etailers, but they  have regular discounted specials.

Let's take one example:
Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion pump 125 ml
> Retail Price in Australia: $74
> Cosmetics Now: $46 ($42 on special)
> OzCosmetics: $46
> StrawberryNet: $48

What makes "Cosmetics Now" a stand-out for me is the fact that they have niche perfumes for sale. Niche perfumes! They are not cheap, but certainly cheaper than at your local perfumery, even with the extra fee you pay for shipping. Some of them are not available for sale in Australia and/or in Perth. The good thing is not only the good prices, is that you won't have to stand the rudeness of any shop assistants, as it happened to me last time I decided to visit my local perfumery. Some of the niche perfume houses available are: Comptoir Sud Pacifique, Amouge, Robert Piguet, E. Coudray, Etro, L'Artisan Perfumeur, Il Profumo, Maitre Perfumeur et Gantier, and many others. Not all of these houses' perfumes are available, and the ones on offer sell fast; if the one you are seeking is available, you will save a  bunch of dollars.

Placing your order and checking out is extremely easy and no-fuss. You can pay with your credit card and Paypal. Shipping is free for all products, except for the perfumes -this is a difference with the other two etailers- and you will be charged a $10 fee.

Their email Customer service is very friendly, but a bit slow, and misinformed at times. I asked about a niche perfume I was interested in; I was told that the product was not available in their warehouse and it would not be back on sale. I was surprised at hearing such a bold statement. About three weeks later, the perfume was back in stock! In case of need, call their 1300 number in Australia or the company number in your country of residence.

Registering as a member is always convenient. "Cosmetics Now" has a Wish List, which always comes handy. They state in their website that they will email you when any out-of-stock item in the list is back for sale; however, I did not receive any email. They also have a reward points system (expenditure pro-rated), which you can exchange for discounts at your next check-out.

My product was dispatched the day after I placed my order, and two tracking links (International and Australia Post's) were provided right away. I got it at home four days later! If you aren't at home they will take it to your nearest Post Office.

I have read some reviews on damaged packaging and odd things regarding the products received. I can only say that this was my first experience shopping with "Cosmetics Now", that the product I received was genuine, arrived in perfect conditions in record time, and it is something I could not get in Perth and Australia at all. There you have it!

UPDATE JANUARY 2015
I have to correct some of the info provided above.
> Since this review was written I have been emailed regularly bout items in my wish list being back in stock, which did not happen when I first reviewerd this place. > Also, they regularly send you updates of your point rewards system, usually monthly.
> Their service has always been excellent, and I cannot recommend them enough.

Nev Skin (Online Shop, Australia)

Nev Skis is an Australian online shop, settled in Queensland, that has been selling vinyl skins for gadgets for eight years. I am one of those people with all my computers customised to the utmost, so places like Nev Skin are my personal heaven. Moreover, the skins protect your device from scratches, and make them look super-cool.

Nev Skin has vinyl skins for almost anything skin-o-able: mobiles, tablets, Ereaders, laptops, notebooks, Ipods, and Gaming consoles. If your laptop is not there, they have universal skins that will fit most of them; you just need to tell them the exact size, and they will trim it for you; or you can get the Universal size and you trim it yourself on arrival, whatever you prefer.  They have a good selection of images, from local and international artists, and you can choose from matte o glossy finish; I always prefer matte because the skin is less affected by glare, you appreciate the artwork better, and you won't notice your fingertips on it. Nev Skin prints on demand, so your skin is freshly printed for you, and the colours vibrant and strong.

The website is very cool to browse around by design, meaning by the specific gadget you have, or just by artist. All images are zoomable, although the zoom is limited in size. The website is very informative about shipping methods and prices, approximate time of delivery, customisation of large-size skins, and on how to apply the skins on to your gadgets. Major credit cards and PayPal are accepted for payment, check-out is no-fuss, and you'll get an email as soon as your order goes through. Once your order is shipped, your will receive another email with a tracking link. Nev Skin uses Australia Post for shipping, and you can select registered or non-registered mail. They charge you just 1 cent for shipping within Australia for most skins, except for laptops over 14" and the PS3 slim and 360s consoles, or if your order is over 500 grams.

Customer service has been very friendly, prompt and informative all the way up by a lovely lady called Joanne.

Nev Skin has identical or very similar prices, dollar up or down, as the ones you find elsewhere online. The prices range from 15 to 30 bucks, depending on your gadget, with a surcharge of 4 bucks for oversized laptop skins.

Regarding the skin I got, it differs little from the image you see on the website. As the zoom on the image is small, I was expecting an image with colours a bit more pastel, and also a less detailed and cleaner image (as the photo below). The skin I got is gorgeous, but the colours are strong and vibrant, and the image much more detailed, which is great with me; however, it might not be the case with other people.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
> They need to improve their zoom to get a better quality and much bigger images of the skins, so you know what you are ordering regarding colours and details of the picture/drawing. Other websites with whom they share artwork and artists do just that. Why Nev Skin doesn't?
> They could easily improve the volume of artwork on offer and add Australian local artists, which would make the site la creme de la creme in a market that, despite aiming customisation, has very similar images elsewhere.
> They should have, as other similar websites have, a "make your own" skin. You upload your own photo or personal artwork to the site and make your own skin, using online tools. Then, they print it and send it to you. That is what call, real customisation!

MIND
As Nev Skin prints your skin after you order it, your skin can take up to a week to be posted. Mine took six natural days (four working days) to be posted, plus the seven days to get from Queensland to Western Australia.
***
I know many sites like Nev Skin on the Internet, the majority of them overseas. Other Australian sites have a bigger selection of artwork, but their artwork is less artistic. Prices are similar elsewhere, so I always prefer buying from an Australian company, especially if, as Nev Skin, they have a good customer service and a good quality product.
