Lethal Cosmetics Pressed eyeshadow (Untamed)

I'm a fan of Lethal Cosmetics eye-shadows. I get so many compliments on them, that I'm the best ambassador for the brand. This shadow is one of my favourite ones of lately because I used to mix similar hues in the past, but now I have them together mixed in this gorgeous duo-chrome. The colours are clearly noticeable but subtle at the same time. This shadow wears well all day long even when I don't use eye primer, and it doesn't smudge. It looks great on my hazel eyes. A bit pricey but totally worth it. This product is vegan, cruelty free and the packaging is made of a very cool folded cardboard, so totally recyclable.

Ubuntu Vegan Cafe (Hawthorn Vic)

I had a great experience in this vegan cafe. I am not vegan but omnivorous, so I also eat vegan. and I am fascinated by how veganism works with taste.

I had the Lizzy burger, with comes with a basket of sweet-potato chips. Wow! It is a mix of beetroot brioche bun, pineapple and Portobello mushrooms, an odd mix of things, I thought. However, all the flavours work together and my burger was finger-leaking yummy. The chips were also yummy, crunchy and very tasty.   The main downside is  that, due to the way the burger was assembled, the filling kept sliding out, so I had to use knife and fork to finish my burger. To me, that's a let down because a burger is something I want to eat with my bare hands.

I'm a bit of a coffee nerd. Not having skim milk to have mine was a bit of, I dunno. However, they have an excellent soya milk coffee! The soya barely noticeable.

The staff were totally awesome, genuinely friendly.

The premises lack character, so it is not a place you go to experience the place and ambience.

Pricing is on the high side.

P. A. W. S. City Cafe (Perth WA) - CLOSED

Perth Western Australia 6000 (08) 9228 2435

Hours:
    Mon-Sun 8:30 - 21:00

Upon entering PAWS, you will get a feeling of entering a comfy backpacker hostel's lounge that is also a bit chaotic, as the shop, eating, serving and cash out areas are all mixed without any sort of harmonious spatial amalgamation - harmonious in its dysfunction, perhaps.

The seating area is very luminous, colourful and comfy, with a few nice ethnic details, office-like furniture, and wonderful world music. It would be great having some sort separation from the other areas by, for example, using cute ethnic screens/curtains so eaters have more intimacy and enjoy their meal without asking themselves "Where am I?".

THE FOOD - The selection of dishes is small, with six varieties of hot dishes and six cold ones, and a cake corner, but everything I tried (two salads and two hot dishes) tasted very good. This is unsophisticated cooking, more home-made vegan cooking than anything else, but the food was very tasty, and had an interesting mix of flavours and textures.  I liked it a lot!

THE COFFEE - The coffee tastes a bit like mocha and is bland in general. A Lavazza machine with coffee pods produces great coffee and would not be out of place in PAWS. :O

THE PRICING - The pricing is fantastic. You can have a decent big vegan dish, mixing salads and hot dishes, for 12 dollars. Besides, you know the money serves a good cause and that what you eat is fresh. Not enough for you? Students get a 10% discount and takeaway is just 5 bucks!

THE SERVICE - Regarding the service, the lady behind the food counter was super-friendly, you go girl!, so much so that instead of charging me for two small dishes, charged me for just a big one, even though two small dishes are bigger than a big one. Lucky me! It was very cool. The cashier lady was completely plugged into her cashing machine and Ipod, and was a bit detached from the world.

TIP
Servings are a bit small, so go for the large dish. I had two small dishes and I left feeling that there was plenty of room for more.

Meow!

UPDATE 24/8/2012
I returned to Paws for lunch today, after Laura's photo showing a meal of humongous proportions. Humongous meals that taste good are my type of meal, you know. Last time I was there, my meal were very good but a bit small in size, and I had to have two small dishes to leave full. Today, I have ordered the big dish, which allow you to have three of the hot curries and three of the salads, plus the rice, for 12 dollars. The serving was indeed humongous. Most importantly everything was tasty and even yummy. The zucchini salad, and the parsley and parsnip one salad were terrific. The curries were also very tasty, and consistent in texture, not fluffy stuff.

I was really tempted by one of the sweets, a sort of vegan tiramisu made with custard, vegan jelly and carrot, and it was yummy and looked so very pretty.

Their coffee is still the same, not bad, but a bit weak for me.

The service is still very good, and the lady behind the kitchen counter a pleasure to deal with.

The place really is very quiet and will suit people who like quiet lunches, surrounded by people who also love quiet lunches in a luminous place. There was this grandma with her grandchild both sleeping on the sofa, as per the photo, and I thought that it was such a great sweet moment, in a restaurant, that I had to take a photo. Only at Paws.

I will be back.

Veggie Mama (Mt Lawley, Perth WA)

 Hours:
    Mon-Thu 7:00 - 19:00
    Sat-Sun 8:00 - 17:00

Veggie Mama is a cute small vegetarian café-restaurant that stands out for its wonderful vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food. Anything on display looks yummy and fresh. Everything I tried tasted great, and the portion sizes were decent. I am not a vegetarian, but I do love vegetarian food, especially if it is well cooked, fresh and tasty, and Veggie Mama has it all. I missed some well-cooked winter dishes, but I was there at an odd time of the day and most of their hot dishes were gone, so that might be the reason.

THE PLACE - The ambience is quiet, relaxed, the decor clean and functional, and the layout cozy and welcoming with three different areas of privacy, lovely traditional wooden furniture and cushioned wall benches, plus the free Wi-Fi and daily newspapers. Really nice.

One thing that Veggie Mama needs to change -they should, they must, ohhh  super-mega-please!-  is the music. Music creates the ambience of a place - or destroys it. I thought I was going to have an indigestion with that cheesy music for the grannies of the world they were playing. I am not saying that you should play Yoko Ono's, you know, but something that goes well with the vibe and name of the place. Veggie Mama resonates with... perhaps, World Music, or Indie intimate music. I am a bit fussy with regards to Music in restaurants and cafés - I prefer having nothing playing than having  something that distresses my stomach and my ears.

THE FOOD - All the food on display looks terrific, fresh and yummy. I am always hesitant to eat at salad bars, because most salad bars or cafés with salads look like a nest of unhealthy dying plants. However, at Veggie Mama, salads not only look fresh, they look popping colourful and bright.

The polenta and the chickpeas patties were yummy, especially the first, and the two salads that I chose were great, especially the cabbage and cranberries one. The watermelon juice was also great.

The serving sizes are considerable, and I usually leave happy as toddler after feeding time.

THE COFFEE - Their coffee was disappointly bland, and they should change the beans or mix they use. Moreover, the coffee cup was small. What's the matter with cafes being so mean with their cup sizes, eh?!

THE PRICING - The pricing for dining in is OK, especially because their serving are generous. However, they are not for take away - 11$ for a container of take-away kale salad is abusive, especially because I bought it at the end of the day, when the waitresses were cleaning before closing down. Do they grow their kale in Armani pots?  Next time, I am going to leave their take-way salad away for me, take myself to the supermarket, grab a whole kale, and prepare the salad myself. I mean, it is not rocket science, is kale science.

UPDATE

I was pleasantly surprised at finding great background music, very much Indie, intimate and inviting to stay. I thought to myself, are they reading my reviews? The service was friendly, and the experience one to replay.

I will come back.
